Batch size reduction can be a game changer for the industry.
Portable music players were launched by Sony. Walkman and Discman revolutionised the music player industry. Consumers could now carry their favourite music with them and listen to it anywhere, even while walking.
Apple broke the industry barriers again with its iPod and iTunes. It didn’t invent portability. Was it just the smaller size, which caused this revolution? I don’t think so.
Apple broke the consumer-relevant barrier of batch size. Before iTunes, consumers could buy music only in albums. Even if they wanted only a specific song, they had no option but to buy the entire album. The perils of large batch sizes!
iTunes allowed consumers to download specific songs on their iPod. Buy songs, not albums. Batch size reduced to just ONE. No wonder the consumption exploded.
When was the last time you reduced batch sizes in your supply chain? For input materials, production, distribution and sales?
What is holding you back?
