Supply Chain agility is not a binary concept.

Supply Chain professionals often ask me ‘How can we become agile?’ While the question is well-intentioned, it reveals a deep seated belief that agility is a binary concept. Either we are agile or we aren’t.

Agility is not binary, it is a continuum. The correct question to ask is ‘How can we become more agile?’

This revelation is actually an encouraging as well as a sobering thought. While every company can improve its agility, they still have a long way to go.

Hypothetically, if we were to measure agility on a scale of 0 to 100, you would find companies at all levels… 10,30,50,80,… Wherever we are currently, agility score can be improved by focusing on the fundamental supply chain capabilities of Demand Sensing, Flexibility, and Responsiveness.

The good news is that every bit of improvement in agility improves product availability, results in fresher products offered to consumers, and improves profits.

That’s why this journey is so fulfilling and rewarding!
