Supply Chains – evolution or transformation?

We have seen various models of supply chain improvement. Some companies believe in evolution, which takes longer but the teams can absorb the changes and these changes are sustained. Other companies prefer transformation, which is faster but more difficult for the teams to absorb and runs the risk of reversal.

We have also seen both success and failure in each of these models. That’s why it remains a mystery for supply chain leaders to choose either evolution or transformation.

I think the right model depends on the maturity of their current supply chain. If the team has been on an improvement path consistently, transformation is the way to go, as the team can absorb the large change.

On the other hand, if a company’s supply chain has remained rigid and busy maintaining status quo, it is advisable to move gradually and let the team absorb small changes to start with, before moving to transformation.
