How do we effectively respond to demand disruptions?
Demand disruptions are getting more frequent these days. Companies need to develop a mechanism to respond to them effectively. The question is… How do we do it?
The first step in response is to identify a disruption early. My interaction with leaders suggests that most companies read the signal too late. Some of them find out from external sources that a disruption has already happened. The teams who read it early are the ones who decipher it from their own demand patterns. They identify significant changes to the demand patterns and take it as a disruption, even if they don’t know the root cause. Demand Sensing using AI/ML models helps us tremendously in this regard.
Once a disruption is identified, its full and fast response requires agility in backend operations. How fast can we tweak the supply plan? How fast can we execute it?
The fundamental capabilities of demand sensing, responsiveness and flexibility need continual improvement to get better and better at handling demand disruptions.
